About
My name is David, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to connect with you through counseling. My journey to becoming a counselor has been a transformative and enlightening one, shaped by my experiences and passions.
I was born in Boise, Idaho, where I grew up surrounded by nature and a supportive community. Later, I found myself in Utah, studying journalism at the University of Utah. However, as much as I enjoyed the field, there was a persistent feeling of unfulfillment, and I found myself searching for a more direct way to make a difference in people's lives.
It was during this time that I stumbled upon an opportunity that changed the course of my journey – working at a wilderness therapy program. There, in the lonely but beautiful deserts of northern Utah, I witnessed the profound impact mental health care could have on an individual. This experience not only gave my life a new direction but also taught me the critical role mental health plays in our society.
While I recognize that wilderness therapy may not be for everyone, it opened my eyes to how we can approach mental health and personal growth. This realization encouraged me to explore and embrace different counseling modalities to offer a well-rounded and personalized approach to those seeking support.
After spending time in Utah, I decided to embark on a new adventure and relocated to the mountain town of McCall and began an Online Master’s Program in Counseling through Southwestern College. In McCall, I have found the perfect blend of nature and community that aligns perfectly with my values. And in Southwestern, I have found a space that simultaneously encourages and challenges me both intellectually and emotionally. When I'm not immersed in my classes, you'll likely find me in the mountains. Nature has always been my sanctuary and an integral part of my life.
Beyond the outdoors, I have a love for science fiction and fantasy and delight in immersing myself in a good book, movie, or television series. I also enjoy stretching my own creative muscles through writing. These passions give me a unique perspective and inspire me to explore creative avenues in my counseling approach.
Ultimately, my goal as a counselor is to provide you with a compassionate and non-judgmental space where we can explore your challenges, celebrate your successes, and foster personal growth. I believe in the power of collaborative therapy, tailoring each session to meet your individual needs, and empowering you to create change in your perception and thereby your life.
Philosophy
As an existential therapist, I believe that the stories we tell ourselves impact our lives tramendously. These narratives shape our perceptions of reality, influence the meaning we find in our experiences, and ultimately determine the path of our lives. The essence of my counseling philosophy lies in empowering individuals to take control of these stories and transform their lives for the better.
Central to my approach is the understanding that true control in life comes from within – we cannot always change external circumstances, but we have the power to interpret and respond to them. The meaning we assign to our experiences is pivotal in determining whether they lead to suffering or growth. I firmly believe that exploring and reshaping these meanings is the key to unlocking personal fulfillment and resilience.
In line with existential principles, I see myself as a facilitator of self-discovery rather than an authority figure with all the answers. I respect the uniqueness of each individual, valuing their autonomy and empowering them to make choices that align with their authentic selves. Together, we embark on a collaborative exploration of their beliefs, values, and goals, unlocking their inner potential and promoting personal growth.
Furthermore, as a counselor, I strive to be a source of hope for my clients. I recognize that life's challenges can be overwhelming, but I firmly believe that change is not only possible but also inevitable. Through a combination of empathy, encouragement, and evidence-based interventions, I aim to instill optimism in my clients, leaving them with the belief that their experiences can and will evolve for the better.
In essence, my counseling philosophy is rooted in the transformational power of personal narratives, the cultivation of self-awareness, and the unwavering belief in the human capacity for change and growth. Together, we will journey through the complexities of life, exploring new perspectives, and embracing the freedom that comes from taking ownership of our stories. Through this process, my goal is to empower my clients to live more authentically, find purpose and meaning, and embark on a fulfilling and enriching life journey.
